When you use ctrl-alt-F1, ctrl-alt-F2, etc, etc. to open different "shells" (don't know if that's the right way to use the term), and then run tasks in each, are those multiple sessions using up more system resources each time I start a new one? Depends what you do in each of those desktops or shells.

As well, software for multiple desktops is much more prevalent than for virtual desktops. Not everyone understands the distinction. Multiple is almost self explanatory - you can have several desktops and arbitrarily choose which one to display at any given time. Virtual desktops are when the desktop has more pixels

Checking the documentation, I think you may be right about the desktops issue. You might try using BroadcastSystemMessage, which has an option to broadcast to all desktops, and see if that works. It does note that broadcasting to all desktops requires the SE_TCB_NAME privilege.
